A BREATH OF LIFE

Monday 21 June to Sunday 27 June

Residential: £475, Non-residential: £317

Please arrive by 6pm on Monday.  Course ends with lunch on Sunday.

The way the breath moves in us is an indicator of how we are. Breath and spirit are intimately connected, like two sides of one coin. Yet our technology-based culture has introduced an artificial split between the two. Breath is seen simply as part of the physiological body and even as something mechanical. Spirit/Soul on the other hand is considered to be quite independent of this.

This retreat will seek to promote integration of breath and spirit. Participants will be helped to become more deeply aware of the ways in which the breath moves in them and to recognise the particular difficulties they may encounter breathing. The ultimate aim is to learn to relax and to allow oneself to be breathed and prayed through the Holy Spirit.

A session of body prayer, including some yoga postures, will be offered each day on an optional basis. Although the focus of the retreat will tend towards Christian spirituality, people of all faiths and none are welcome.

Some individual guidance will be offered. An atmosphere of silence is encouraged for this retreat.

Father Louis Hughes OP is an Irish Dominican priest. He lectured at St Charles Seminary, Nagpur (India), from 1972 to 1978. When in India, he began the practice and study of yoga, integrating Indian techniques for body-training, breathing and centring with Christian meditation. Since returning to Ireland, he has taught body-mind spirituality and published books, tapes and a DVD in the field of holistic Christianity. www.bodymindmeditation.ie
