Ammerdown Centre - The venue with a difference

About the Ammerdown Centre

The Ammerdown Centre is a well-established Christian Retreat and Conference Centre, open to people of all faiths or of none. It provides facilities for residential and day programmes and retreats, some arranged by the Centre staff and some by outside groups. The Centre aims to offer a calm and relaxing environment, conducive to spiritual growth and the promotion of peace, reconciliation and social justice. about seven thousand people come to Ammerdown each year, some to stay and some for day visits.

The Centre was first opened in 1973 in buildings which were converted from what had been the stables of Ammerdown House. It is set in parkland in the beautiful Somerset countryside, about four miles from Radstock and twelve miles from Bath. The Centre was closed from November 2004 to June 2005 for major rebuilding and restoration. Now it is beautifully refurbished and extended to provide accommodation for up to 70 people in en-suite rooms, with good facilities for disabled visitors. A new lay Director, Bndicte Scholefield, joined the Centre in May 2005. As Director, she is responsible for putting together the annual programme of courses and events, for overseeing publicity, marketing, fundraising and bookings, and for developing the Centres special ministry in dialogue, peace-building and conflict resolution. She is also responsible for the day to day operations and, with the help of the household manager, oversees the work of the paid staff and volunteers.

The Ammerdown Centre is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. There are currently 11 Governors on its Board including a Rabbi, a Methodist, a Quaker, several Anglicans and several Roman Catholics.
