Understanding Islam 2017

Dr Chris Hewer has been leading courses on Understanding Islam at Ammerdown since 2011.  His courses have, until now, always taken place over three intensive days of teaching to help those who could not afford too much time away from work or family. Other have, however, found it too intense. As a result, it has been decided that, this year, Chris’s two Ammerdown courses will be of differing length: a three-day course in November and this one from Monday to Friday, which will allow the teaching to take place at a slightly more leisurely pace.

Chris writes: “A good understanding of Islam is a must in Britain today, where Muslims are by far the biggest religious group after British Christians. In many of our major towns and cities, they make up a substantial minority of the population. This should encourage us all to get to know Islam and Muslims better and to explore ways of building bridges of mutual respect and understanding – especially those among us involved with Muslims as neighbours, workplace acquaintances or clients in the caring professions.

This course has been designed to give an appreciation of the inner dimensions of Islam and the way that it shapes the lives of Muslims, as well as the outer manifestations of Islam as a religion. Put simply, if we are to engage with our Muslim fellow citizens, then we need to understand something of their world view, beliefs, practices and the history of relations through the centuries. This course will equip you to do just that.”

Chris comes from a background in Christian theology, education, Islamic studies and inter-faith studies, and has worked in the field of Muslims in Britain and Christian-Muslim relations since 1986. His current work involves teaching study days and residential courses, together with developing written and electronic resources on Islam. Chris’s international standing as a highly regarded teacher and communicator on Islam is evidenced by the fact that, in 2013, he was commissioned by the Muslim Ahl ul-Bayt TV channel to write and present a 46 part series on ‘Understanding Islam’, which is available on Chris’s website.

Chris has built a reputation at Ammerdown for being an exceptional scholar and teacher with an outstanding understanding and love of Islam and a passion for sharing it with others. “Compelling”, “Superb”, “Very informative presentations coupled with a great sense of humour”, “Extraordinary knowledge” are all quotes taken out of the evaluation forms on Chris’s courses.

*Cost: This course is being subsidised by the Ammerdown Centre in order to make it as affordable as possible. However, if even at a lower rate cost remains an issue, please enquire about further discounts.
