Understanding Islam

A good understanding of Islam is a must in Britain today, where Muslims number by far the biggest religious group after Christians. In many of our major towns and cities, they make up a substantial minority of the population. This constitutes an invitation to everyone to get to know Islam and Muslims better and to explore ways of building bridges of mutual respect and understanding. This particularly applies to those involved with Muslims as neighbours, friends, colleagues or clients in the caring professions.

This intensive three day course has been designed to give an appreciation of the inner dimensions of Islam and the way that it shapes the lives of Muslims, as well as the outer manifestations of Islam as a religion. Put simply, if we are to engage with our Muslim fellow citizens, then we need to understand something of their world view, beliefs, practices and the history of relations through the centuries. This course will give you this understanding.

The course will be given by Dr Chris Hewer. Chris comes from a background in Christian theology, education, Islamic studies and inter-faith studies and has worked in the field of Muslims in Britain and Christian-Muslim relations since 1986 - first at the Centre for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at Selly Oak in Birmingham and from 1999 to 2005, as the Adviser on Inter-Faith Relations to the Bishop of Birmingham. From 2006-2010, he was the St Ethelburga Fellow in Christian-Muslim Relations in London, with a brief to deliver adult popular education courses, study days and talks around Greater London. His current work is to teach study days and residential courses, and to develop written and electronic resources. In particular, Chris wrote and presented in 2013 a 12 series documentary titled ‘Understanding Islam’, commissioned by Islamic channel Ahl ul-Bayt TV (for more information, visit www.chrishewer.org).

[Note by the Director of Ammerdown: I attended one of Chris’ earlier courses at Ammerdown and it was superb. I thought that I knew a fair bit about Islam but realised that I understood in fact very little. The fact that Chris is a Christian who understands Islam inside out was a great plus. He understood where we were coming from and was able to explain everything in a way accessible to all. We could also ask him any question we wanted without fear of offending. I cannot recommend the course highly enough to those who want to understand Islam and Muslims better].

*Cost: This course is being subsidised by the Ammerdown Centre in order to make it as affordable as possible. However if, even at a lower rate, cost remains an issue, please enquire about further discounts.

N.B. Please note that this course is repeated on 11 to 13 November.
