'Teshuvah' (Repentance in Hebrew) - Reaching new heights

Sr Maureena Fritz nds, from the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, is rated by our guests as an exceptional teacher and retreat leader, who has the rare gift of bringing the Word of God to life and making it relevant to our own personal journeys. “Amazing teacher and beautiful person” and “We hung on her every word! What a fantastic, amazing and gracious woman. I feel privileged to have met her, and do hope there will be a next time!”.

Thankfully there is to be a next time, as we have persuaded Sr Maureena to come again in 2016 all the way from Jerusalem. This time, she will explore the true meaning of Repentance (or ‘Teshuvah’ in Hebrew), drawing on Jesus’ teaching: “Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” (Lk. 15.7)

Sr Maureena writes: “Don’t try to blot out your failings and sins (you can’t—they will always be part of who we are since we are our decisions). Instead, learn how to use them as stepping-stones to reach the heights. Soloveitchik, the great Jewish master said that teshuvah is as “if God lifts up and elevates sin and transgression to unimaginable heights… To believe is necessary, but it is not enough; one must also feel and sense the existence of God. The presence of God must be a personal, intimate experience.”

Maureena will examine her chosen theme by introducing diverse forms of interpretation of Scripture, which will foster attention not only to the sacred text but also to the world and to divine reality. Poetry and film will accompany the study of the Biblical texts.

Maureena, a Sister of our Lady of Sion, is Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Theology, USMC, University of Toronto, and is the Founder of the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, whose purpose is defined as “Christians Studying the Bible within its Jewish Milieu, using Jewish sources”. She teaches at the Institute and give workshops worldwide. She has written several books on praying with the Hebrew Scriptures.
