Jane Austen's Mansfield Park

Our wonderful Jane Austen’s expert Hazel Jones has proven so popular in recent years that she has offered to run a second Jane Austen course at Ammerdown during the course of the year. This time, she will focus on Jane Austen’s book ‘Mansfield Park’.

Hazel writes: “Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse are among the best-loved heroines in English fiction, but nobody falls in love with Fanny Price, the reticent heroine of 'Mansfield Park'. What, then, was Jane Austen up to in her third novel, published in 1814, and what was happening in her life at the time? The reasoning behind the writing will be fully explored through a detailed study of the issues pertinent to this profound text: in particular, education and morals, families and relationships, town values as opposed to country values, the dangers of playacting and the role of the Georgian clergy in 19th century society. One session will focus specifically on 'Lovers' Vows', the infamous play at the heart of the novel, which the group will read aloud.”

The course will include a whole day's outing to Steventon Church, Jane Austen's House Museum and Chawton House Library.

Hazel Jones, a self-confessed Jane Austen addict, has been running residential courses on Jane Austen since 1996. She is so good that she has already built up quite a following at Ammerdown: “Hazel is absolutely superb. She is always very well prepared and pitches her courses at just the right level, so everyone can join in and contribute”; “It is a truth universally accepted that Hazel Jones is the best Jane Austin teacher, writer and Ammerdown course leader!”.

* N.B. The cost of the course includes the cost of transport during the day out.

Hazel is also leading another Jane Austen course at Ammerdown this year, from 5 to 9 May, this time on the early work of the famous author.
