God speaks to us in the situations of our lives

Please arrive by 6pm on Monday. Retreat/Course ends with lunch on Friday.

Sr Maureena Fritz is rated by our guests as an exceptional teacher and retreat leader, who has the rare gift of bringing the Word of God to life and making it relevant to our own personal journeys. “Amazing teacher and beautiful person” and “We hung on her every word! What a fantastic, amazing and gracious woman. I feel privileged to have met her, and do hope there will be a next time!”.

Thankfully there is to be a next time, as we have persuaded Sr Maureena to come all the way from Jerusalem for another Ammerdown retreat in 2014. This time, she will focus on how God speaks to us.

Maureena writes: “The Bible is a record of encounters between God and a People, between God and individuals. God spoke to Adam and Eve, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to Sarah, Leah, Rebecca and Rachel. God spoke to Mary, Joseph and Jesus. How did God speak to these biblical characters? How did they understand God's Voice? Was it a Voice thundering down from Heaven, a Voice they heard with their own ears? A Voice from within? And how can we distinguish God's Voice from all the other voices we hear?"

Several answers have been given to this question. Martin Buber wrote: “One should beware altogether of understanding the conversation with God… as something that occurs merely apart from or above the everyday. God's address to us penetrates the events in all our lives.” The Israeli poet Rina Levinson wrote: “How many signs does God send us? How many road signs does God light up? Only listen to the echo of the strings. Please (I beseech you), listen to the echo of the strings.” Aviva Zornberg, a Jewish professor said that "Abraham heard God's command to go forth from his country, kindred and home through a deep dissatisfaction that took over his soul."

Through biblical accounts, also in modern film and song, we will examine how humans have heard God's voice and how they hear it today. To personally hear God’s Voice and respond to it is to become, in Buber’s words, “a Unique One”, and in the words of Kierkegaard “a Single One”. What a privilege this is!

Maureena, a Sister of our Lady of Sion, is Professor Emerita of the Faculty of Theology, USMC, University of Toronto and is the Founder of the Bat Kol Institute in Jerusalem, whose purpose is defined as “Christians Studying the Bible within its Jewish Milieu, using Jewish Sources”. She continues to teach at the Institute and to give workshops worldwide. She has written several books on Praying with the Hebrew Scriptures.
