Chinese Brush Painting

Celebrated tutor Maggie Cross returns to Ammerdown to lead two courses in 2016, suitable once again for people of all abilities, including complete beginners.

Both courses are suitable for people of all abilities and experience.

Led by: Maggie Cross

Please arrive 6pm Sunday. Course ends with lunch on Friday

Maggie Cross is one of our most popular tutors. This is not surprising: she has shown herself to be an excellent teacher as well as a gifted artist, and our guests have been amazed at what they managed to achieve in the space of a few days – even complete beginners.

During this course, suitable for all abilities, Maggie will present a fusion of East and West. The focus will be on flowers, adding birds and small creatures to complement your painting. Maggie will begin by introducing specialist Chinese subjects such as lotus, explaining the symbolism which plays an important part in this art. During the latter part of the course you will paint wild flowers and insects taking inspiration from your local surroundings.

You will use traditional Chinese methods and materials throughout. The emphasis will be on freestyle techniques, although there will be an opportunity to work in the more detailed ‘meticulous’ style if you wish.

Maggie spent her childhood in Hong Kong, where she studied brush painting and also learnt to speak Cantonese and write Chinese characters. She is a member of The Chinese Brush Painters’ Society and the Society of Floral Painters. She regularly exhibits her work and also frequently lectures and teaches on the subject. She has published three books.

Maximum number 12, so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Participants will be given a list of basic items to bring with them. Traditional brush painting materials will be available for loan or sale from the tutor.

Celebrated tutor Maggie Cross returns to Ammerdown for her second course of the year, suitable once again for people of all abilities, including complete beginners.

You will sketch and paint a wide variety of trees, depicting them during different seasons. You will then be able to place them in the landscape which may be traditional Chinese or inspired by your immediate surroundings. There will also be an opportunity to paint branches in close-up and include a bird or small creature to add ‘chi’ to your composition.

You will use the traditional Chinese techniques and materials throughout.
