
The beautiful gardens of Ammerdown House, located off the Radstock - Frome Road will be open on 29 August 2011 in aid of charity. (Shelter, an orphanage in the Philippines, and the Ammerdown Centre).
The public will be able to visit the normally private gardens of the Joliffe family between 11am and 5pm. They were designed by famous landscape artist Edwin Lutyens at the beginning of the twentieth century and include an Italian Garden and a beautiful Orangery, which was featured in the2008 BBC adaptation of ‘Tess of the d’Ubervilles’. There is also a private lake surrounded by meadows.
The Ammerdown Retreat and Conference Centre which is located on the same site, will be offering visitors morning coffee, light lunches (such as ‘home-made soup and bread’ or ‘jacket potato and salad’), and afternoon tea with delicious homemade cakes. The Ammerdown Centre also has a book and craft shop where purchases may be made.
Entrance to the Gardens is £4 for adults and £3 for senior citizens. Children are admitted free of charge.
